Olympic Champion Alina KABAEVA will take leave of active competitive sports, as Irina Viner, Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics head coach, announced to the Russian press. From January 24 - 27 the America's Premier Rhythmic Gymnastics Event "LA LIGHTS INVITATIONAL 2008" was held,  hosted by Los Angeles'  "School of Gymnastics". Competitors from 14 countries and Olympians from the 2004 Olympic Games took part.
Winner of the top 10 level was the reigning all-around world champion from the Ukraine, Anna BESSONOVA (71.250). On second place came Evgenia KANAEVA (RUS; 69,375), followed by Lyubov CHARKASHINA (63.875).

The Dutch press informed that the 24th Anniversary of the traditional Deventer Grand Prix Tournament 2008 is cancelled because of financial problems.
Since 1985, then as "Alfred Vogel Tournament" , it has been a fixed component of the Grand Prix Circuit of Rhythmic Gymnastics.
The 2008 series will start in Moscow at the end of February and will end with the eighth event in November in Bratislava.

Pre-Olympics Rhythmic Gymnastics
After the pre-Olympic artistic gymnastics and the trampoline gymnastics competitions, the triple serie of the gymnastics disciplines ends now with the Pre-Olympics of Rhythmic gymnastics, which took place from December 5 to 7. From November 22nd to 25th, the 60th All Japan Championships 2007 of  Rhythmic Gymnastics were held in Tokyo.

Ai YOKOCHI was happy but at the same time sorrowful: She won the first big national title at last, just in time with her retirement.
With a score of 59.900 she beat  Mai HIDAKA (59.700) and so she blocked the 7th title in sequence of the 'Grand Dame" of Japanese Rhythmic gymnastics, Yukari MURATA, who came at third place at the all-round competition (53.350).
