Meritorious Canary Islands gymnastics official passes away

 At the opening press conference of this year's BLUME Festival Gran Canaria 2024 in the Canary Island capital of Las Palmas, the organising committee announced the death of one of the long-time co-founders of this world-renowned gymnastics festival: Shortly before the 62nd edition of the festival, the president of the sports association GIMNASIO LAS PALMAS, Cornelio Ortega MARTINEZ had passed away at the age of 76. In his 57 years as an active sports teacher and coach, he coached and inspired over 3,000 girls, boys, teenagers and adults who enjoyed physical activity in a wide variety of gymnastics disciplines and led them to sporting success. He was still an active gymnast at the very first BLUME Festival in 1960 and later developed into an almost irreplaceable assistant and man of practice alongside the legendary ‘Canarian gymnastics father’ Jesus Telo Nuñez, who founded this festival and named it after the Spanish folk hero Joaquim BLUME, who died in an accident ...
