First individual Gold for Germany and group Gold for China! |
Germany's first Olympic Rhythmic Gold!
In the all-around final of rhythmic gymnastics today, 17-year-old gymnast Darja VARFOLOMEEV - protégée of a 2000 Olympic champion, Yulia Raskina - won the first Olympic gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics for Germany with four almost flawless routines - after the only previous medal, Regina Weber's bronze (Los Angeles 1984). The exceptional athlete from Schmiden thus saved the honour of Germany's second-largest sports federation, which had previously remained without a medal in Paris, having failed to achieve a podium finish in both artistic gymnastics and tampolin gymnastics!
Equally sensational is the 4th place of the German champion Margarita Kolosov from Potsdam, who achieved a previously hardly expected top position behind the top favourites Boryana KALEYN (BUL) and Italy's former world champion Sofia RAFFAELI ...!

♦ PREVIEW - Individual all-around: With the retirement of Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Linoy Ashram (ISR), the throne is empty, but there is no shortage of contenders for the throne. The podium favourites in the individual competition in Paris include current world champion Darja Varfolomeev (GER), 2022 world champion Sofia Raffaeli (ITA) and 2024 European champion Stiliana Nikolova (BUL), world champion Daria Atamanov (ISR) and Boryana Kaleyn (BUL), one of only six Olympic returnees in the field of 24 gymnasts. Whatever happens, it will be historic.
Another highlight is 16-year-old Taisiia Onofriichuk (UKR) from Ukraine, who is competing in the senior category for the first time this year. Her challenge will be to make it into the top ten after qualifying like all the other 24 participants in order to reach the final.

♦ FINAL - INDIVIDUAL ALL-AROUND > Start list
Incredible sensational success for Germany:
Gymnast Darja VARFOLOMEEV wins her first Olympic gold!
With four almost flawless routines, 17-year-old gymnast Darja VARFOLOMEEV - protégée of 2000 Olympic champion Yulia Raskina - won the first Olympic gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics after Germany's Regina Weber's bronze medal (Los Angeles 1984). The exceptional athlete from Schmiden thus saved the honour of the second-largest German sports federation, which had previously remained without a medal in Paris and had not achieved a podium place in either artistic gymnastics or tampolin gymnastics!
In the final, Varfolomeev started highly focussed after her faulty preliminary routine with the hoop, marking further top scores of the day with this apparatus and then with the ball and clubs!
Her fiercest rival, Italy's former world champion Sofia RAFFAELI, on the other hand, had to wait a long time after her commanding victory in the preliminaries to see whether she would even win a medal after a major mistake in the ball routine: Bulgaria's European champion from the previous year, Boryana KALEYN, had already fought her way to a secure silver place with the most balanced routines of the competition and enchanted the enthusiastic audience as an excellent "Parisian pirouette queen". Raffaeli ended up with a well-deserved bronze medal after all, although she did not master the ribbon flawlessly either.
The German champion from Potsdam, Margarita KOLOSOV, achieved another sensational result in fourth place and certainly had the competition of her life. She was even in medal contention at one point, but Raffaeli overtook her by one point after the ribbon routine.
What a success for the German girls and the coaches working for them and with them, Natalya and her daughter Yulia Raskina - the latter of whom was already named "Coach of the Year" by the DOSB in 2022 - they have proved at the German performance centre in Schmiden that top international performances are possible in Germany if you consistently pursue common goals with the athletes on an equal footing!
Chapeau to the whole team!

♦ Indiv. All-around - Qualification:
Intermediate standings after round 1 > Start list (hoop + ball):
Former world champion (2022) Sofia Raffaeli (ITA) leads after two apparatus with 70.150 points after the best hoop routine and the ball (5th), followed by Bulgaria's Boryana Kaleyn (69.950) and the 15-year-old Ukrainian newcomer to the scene, Taisiia Onofriichuk (69.500).
Germany's current four-time world champion Darja Varfolomeev initially presented the most difficult ball routine of the competition and received the top score of 36.450. However, her apparatus then jumped completely off the mat right at the start of the hoop routine. Scoring 32.500 points (13th), she dropped back to fourth place (68.950), ahead of the second Bulgarian, Stiliana Nikolova (68.600).
However, there should be no doubt that she will qualify for the top ten of tomorrow's all-around final after the two remaining hand apparatus (clubs and ribbon).
This was also achieved by the current German champion Margerita Kolosov after two strong performances (34.550+33.000=67.550. in 7th place.

* Final score qualification --:
With the best club routine in the 3rd round (35.000) Italy's Sofia Raffaeli maintained the lead, Margarita Kolosov delivered the second best club routine (33.800), ahead of the Ukrainian shooting star Taisiia Onofriichuk (33.750) in second place, while Boryana Kaleyn shone with the ribbon (32.900) and is currently third, just ahead of Darja Varfolomeev (GER; 32.65) and then Margarita Kolosov in fifth place before the last apparatus!
The last and decisive round was characterised by the best club routine of the day by Darja Varfolomeev: highest difficulties without any recognisable mistakes, presented with an apparent looseness and lightness of being - simply fantastic! With 35.250 points, she moved into second place, just 2.5 points behind Sofia Raffaeli, who also maintained her lead in the preliminary competition with the ribbon and the highest score (33.950), both pursued by Boryana Kaleyn and the Ukrainian teenager Taisia Onofritschuk.
Margarita Kolosov from Potsdam (GER) also put on an inspiring all-round performance until the third apparatus. However, after two apparatus losses with the ribbon, there was still a lot of trepidation, but in the end 5th place was still enough for the final!
But Bulgaria's medal hope Stiliana Nikolova disappointed, falling far short of her potential in the afternoon group with clubs and ribbon, and in the end was pushed into 11th place by the second Italian Milena Baldassari and the Chinese Wang, Zilu!
This means that the qualified 10 finalists will be determined after the last apparatus round, which will start at zero on Friday at 2.30 pm local time!

.
* The silver medal was taken by ISRAEL, who lept from fifth to second place with a heartfelt homage to the Moulin Rouge, complete with a depiction of the windmill’s sails with their ribbons. Qualification, GROUPS, All-around ►Start list
* Short commentary --: After exercise 1 of the qualification with the 5 hoops, Italy's lead as bronze medallists from Tokyo was not unexpected. However, with 38.200 points, they relegated Olympic champions Bulgaria to second place by half a point. The 3rd place of the French women in the sold-out and enthusiastic Arena Porte de la Chapelle, who finished ahead of China and Brazil with 36.600 points, was highly acclaimed!
There were disappointed faces among the Israeli girls behind them in 7th place, as well as the co-favourites from Spain, who only finished a disappointing 13th with major mistakes, while Germany's group in 9th place will also have to improve in the 2nd round with 3 ribbons/2 balls in order to reach tomorrow's group final of the best eight.
► Intermediate Results (- after 5 hoops)
* In the 2nd round of the combined routine (3 ribbons/2 balls), the Ukrainians took the lead with impressive difficulty (18.800!) + group harmony ahead of the Chinese, both of whom secured their place in the final.
At the top, Bulgaria passed the Italians with higher difficulty and better execution and took the lead until the end.
Once again, the hall went wild with the French, who were not completely flawless, but were sensational and almost brought the hall to a boil! 4th place - qualification achieved! That in itself was a minor sensation, but everyone was probably in favour of the Olympic hosts based on their performance!
Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan also made it to the final in 7th and 8th place, while last year's World Championship bronze medallists Spain were eliminated (9th)!
Also disappointing was the disastrous elimination of the German group, who slipped to penultimate place out of the 14 nations after a dramatic tape tangle and various mistakes with the second-lowest execution score (3.95 - only Egypt was weaker).
