After Cincinnati (USA) 2016 and Magglingen (SUI) 2018, the 14th World Championships in Wheel Gymnastics were planned for May 2021 in New Jersey but had to be canceled and postponed due to the pandemic. After four years, the International Rhoenrad Feration (IRV) is finally able to organise a World Championships in Wheel Gymnastics again: This will now take place from 2022 May 25th to 28th in Sønderborg (DEN), which today is considered the most important Art Nouveau town in Denmark.
Despite difficult and very challenging training conditions, 93 athletes have qualified for the championships and traveled to Sønderburg / Denmark. In the aftermath of Covid conditions and its lockdowns, no nation is able to send a full contingent. of participants, but with 22 gymnasts the German delegation will be the biggest, followed by Japan (12 athletes), Switzerland and the US team (both with 11 gymnasts).

All in all, gymnasts from 13 nations will be present. The organizers welcome wheelers from Bulgaria and Ghana for the first time. For many junior gymnasts, these championships will be the first occasion to compete at an international level in a real time event. After the qualifications for the elite (Wednesday) and the juniors (Thursday), the first decisions will be made on Thursday (May 26) in the young discipline Cyr Wheel. On Friday all-around champions in wheel gymnastics will be determined and on Saturday (May 28th) the individual finals of the elite and juniors will take place in the wheel gymnastics disciplines..

* On the final day of these World Championships, Germany’s women once again dominated with World Championship titles in all the three individual final disciplines, with Japan and Austria splitting the gold medal in three: Karina Peisker (GER), Birgit Halwachs (AUT) and Aya Horiguchi (JPN) are the three new straight line world champions. Lilia Lessel created the best spirals and Sarah Metz brought Germany the third daily title in the women's vault
