* Today: ECh Finals |
From December 01 until December 04, 2021, the European gymnastics federation "European Gymnastics" is organizing its 13th European "TeamGYMnastics" championships.
After the 2020 corona-related cancellation of Copenhagen (DEN), the old Portuguese city of Guimarães in the north of the country is now the host - historically once the first state capital that is also known as the "cradle of the nation" - and housesnow around 500 gymnasts from 14 European countries with 38 of their best group formations and teams (women / mixed / men; juniors & seniors). After the 11th EM in 2016 in Maribor / SLO and most recently in 2018 in the capital region of Odivelas,
* Now Portugal is the host country of this TeamGym competition for the second time. The venue is the Pavilhão Multiusos de Guimarães, a large multi-purpose arena with a capacity for approx. 7,000 spectators.
* On Friday Swedish female and male junior groups won the gold medal, but British mixed team was succesful in front of Sweden and Iceland...!
* Saturday, December 04 will follow now the decisions of elite categories ...:
♦♦ TeamGYM ... comes from Scandinavia as a specialcompetition idea.
Since 1996 there have been European championships every two years, since 2005 also recognized and adopted as a form of competition by the then UEG, today's European continental association "European Gymnastics" (EG) and consists of the three disciplines
→ FLOOR EXERCISES - dance group choreography of gymnastic, gymnastics and acrobatic elements with evaluation requirements for synchronous and aesthetic harmony,
→ TUMBLING - 4-6 participants complete a series of acrobatic jumps on a 14m-long fiberglass run in the river and 3 runs in a row
→ TRUMPETTE - 4-6 players complete 3 jumps from the mini trampoline, whereby at least one round must be completed over a 1.65 m high vaulting table.

At the beginning of ECh history, club formations were still allowed. The two "non-Scandinavian" successes come from this time:
In 1998 the German women’s group of TSC Berlin won and in the same year the mixed formation of USK Prague (CZE).
Otherwise, and since 2010 the ECh has only been announced for national groups, all wins and medals went to Scandinavia - to the Danish men's team even since 1998 in uninterrupted succession!

* The MIXED teams opened the competition. As in the qualification round, Sweden proved too strong to beat. With the highest scores on all three apparatus, the Swedes cruised to victory, defending their title successfully. Two new countries wrote their name on the medal winners list. Great Britain claimed their first ever senior medal in TeamGym by finishing second, while Italy made its first appearance ever on the podium, in third place! ► Mixed group;
* In the WOMEN’s teams final the battle couldn’t be tighter. Sweden and Iceland went head-to-head with the ultimate run determining the final ranking. Iceland needed 17.200 on tumble to equal Sweden’s total score of 57.250. And the Icelandic did exactly that! As the two countries’ tied, a tie breaker was needed. As Iceland posted the best scores on floor and trampet, they were awarded the title, last won back in 2012. Making their return to the podium, also for the first time since 2012, claiming the bronze medal, were the ladies representing Finland. ► Women's group; :

Equalling Sweden for the top score on that apparatus, the Icelandic men secured the silver medal, their podium finish in this category. Great Britain concluded a hugely successful Europeans with the bronze, also their first in this category. Shoutout to the men of Portugal who delivered a gorgeous floor routine to the delight of the Guimaraes’ crowd, the Azeri men for their sky-high tumbling including two triples and the Slovenian men for their spark and enthusiasm. ► Men's group;
