FIG Congress confirms Watanabe as President

At the 83rd Congress of the World Gymnastics Federation (FIG) in Antalya, Turkey, the Japanese incumbent Morinari WATANABE (JPN) prevailed against the challenger and EC President Farid Garibov (AZE) with a clear majority of 81:47. Ali AL-HITMI (QAT) was elected as 1st Vice President, Nelli KIM (BLR) as 2nd Vice President and the Turk Suat CELEN (TUR) as Vice No. 3, all for a corona-related shortened term of three years (2022-2024). The German-speaking European area is neither represented in the top FIG committees nor, for the first time, in the two technical committees for artistic gymnastics. The president of the largest gymnastics federation in the world, DTB president Alfons Hoelzl, failed as a candidate for the FIG Council, as did his Swiss general sports colleague Rudolf Steuri

 

 


ELECTION of the 21 Members of FIG COUNCIL


** Of the 42 applicants as council members, came 12 from Europe. Of the 7 to be elected, four were confirmed in office (BUL, GRE, HUN, NOR) and three new members were elected (ISR, ITA, SLO).
The two representatives from the German-speaking area, DTB President Alfons Hölzl from Germany and the Swiss STV representative Rudolf Steuri were not elected.
