FIG Indiv. Apparatus WC Circuit 2018-20

With 4 victories for China and 3 gold medals for Japan, the "44^th Tournament of Masters" in Cottbus (GER) turned into a kind of "Asian Games". The remaining three gold medals went to Ukraine. Cottbus was the 11th and last World Challenge Cup of 2019.
Already on the last weekend of February 2019, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) continued its individual equipment World Cup Circuit (Challenge Cups 2018/2020) and started the World Cup year 2019 in Melbourne. The station Baku (AGF- Trophy) and one week later then Doha (QAT) followed. At the end of May 2019, three of these individual equipment events took place: Zhaoqing (CHN), followed by Osijek (CRO), followed by Slovenian Koper. At the end of August, the series continued in Turkey (Mersin) and three more followed in September alone, ahead of the World Cup: Szombathely (HUN) and Paris (FRA) and Guimaraes (POR) before the 2019 series in November in Cottbus (21. - 24. 11.) with the 11th (!) Challenge Cup of the calendar year - however this time with above-average appealing qualitative occupation - is finished.

♦ Five Golds for Japanese Men

*fig-report--: Takaaki Sugino, Takuya Nagano and Hirohito Kohama combined to bring five of the six men's titles back to Japan. The 20-year-old Sugino, who earlier won Pommel Horse in Paris in 2017 and Horizontal Bar in Koper in 2018, won golds in Guimaraes on Floor Exercise (14.000) and Pommel Horse (14.825).
Nagano claimed the title on Still Rings with the highest score of the final (14.925), and added a second gold medal on Parallel Bars (14.150). Teammate Hirohito Kohama won bronze on Parallel Bars and gold on Horizontal Bar, and like Nagano, was competing in his first World Challenge Cup.
Sebastian Gawronski (POL) scooped up the remaining title on Men's Vault, his first World Challenge Cup medal.

♦ Mexico nabs most medals

With 11 medals, including two golds, Team Mexico was the most successful nation in Guimaraes. Mexican-American Frida Esparza and 2012 Olympian Elsa Garcia, 29, finished 1-2 on Uneven Bars. Esparza impressed with a 6.1-Difficulty routine (13.650) that included a toe-on full, Stalder-Shaposhnikova to immediate full-twisting Pak salto (Bhardwaj) transition and another difficult combination of Maloney to Pak to Stalder-Shaposhnikova-half.
Ana Lago and Anapaula Gutierrez gave Mexico another first and second place finish on Women's Floor Exercise. The Mexican men, meanwhile, won all six silver medals, with three gymnasts mounting the podium twice each.
Daniel Corral, who in 2013 became the first Mexican gymnast to win a World medal (silver on Pommel Horse), added more silver in Guimaraes behind Sugino on both Floor Exercise and Pommel Horse. Teammate Fabian de Luna also doubled up with silver on Still Rings and Vault and Isaac Nunez claimed second places on Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar. Kevin Cerda brought Mexico its 11th medal with bronze on Horizontal Bar.

♦ Martins, Almeida medal at home

Third on Uneven Bars, Filipa Martins (POR) won the title on Balance Beam in a tie-break over fellow 2016 Olympian Ana Derek (CRO). Derek also placed third on Floor Exercise, while teammate Tijana Tkalcec took silver on Vault behind Paula Mejias (PUR). Sophie Marois (CAN) won two bronze medals, on Women's Vault and Balance Beam. Bernardo Almeida (POR) also delighted the home crowd with his bronze medal on Still Rings. Other bronze medals went to Patrick Palmroth (FIN) on Men's Floor Exercise, Yumin Abbadini (ITA) on Pommel Horse, and Umberto Zurlini (ITA) on Men's Vault.

 It was the second of seven stops on the World Challenge Cup calendar for 2019, and will be followed with a competition in Koper (SLO, 30 May-2 June). The series will then resume at the end of August in Mersin (TUR, 30 August-1 September) before it concludes with three legs in September: Szombathely (HUN, 6-8 September), Paris (FRA, 14-15 September) and Guimaraes (POR, 19-22 September).
Seligman: Gold at last for hometown hero
Osijek’s own Robert Seligman (33), delighted the crowd with a gold on his speciality, Pommel Horse. A familiar face in Osijek, Seligman was just sixth on Pommel Horse last year, after winning silver medals on the event in 2015 and in 2017. Seligman scored 14.533, earning the highest Execution score of the final, en route to first place. ...

*PARTICIPANTS: The Qatar Gymnastics Federation announces a stounding numbers of participants for the third World Challenge Cup in the Aspire Dome in Doha, where a week after Baku there is another opportunity to qualify for the Olympics: 130 male and nearly 60 female gymnasts have announced themselves for these competitions!

Asian Dominance

With eight of the 10 titles, Asian gymnasts dominated down under at the FIG Individual Apparatus World Cup 2019 No. 1 in Melbourne (AUS) last weekend, as the individual Olympic qualification continued for Tokyo. Gymnasts from China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea and the Philippines divided the majority of the honours, with Vanessa Ferrari (ITA) and Igor Radivilov (UKR) winning one title each. More than 90 athletes from 30 nations traveled to the Melbourne Arena for the third edition of the competition, the first World Cup of 2019 in Artistic Gymnastics.
The competition is the second stage of the 2018-2020 World Cup series, which kicked off last November in Cottbus (GER), and goes through March 2020.
. Chinese claimed four titles
The Chinese men and women each claimed two titles. Two-time world champion Fan Yilin was untouchable on Uneven Bars with 14.833. Fan spun to a 6.3-Difficulty score to top her teammate Lyu Jiaqi by nearly half a point, with Georgia-Rose Brown (AUS) winning bronze for the home team.
