* In a tense Team Final, the fight for gold at the end between RUSSIA and CHINA came to a head: Only with the last stretching exercise CHINA celebrated for the 12th time since 1983 a team victory and defeated RUSSIA with with a two-teenth point lead! Olympic champion and defending World champion JAPAN could not yet replace his only partially usable top star Kohei UCHIMURA and won the bronze medal. Behind the medal trio in the close chasing field the USA and Great Britain, who held the bronze medal in the last three title fights in the half century before.
The Swiss men's team defended its 6th place from the last time and behind the Brazilians the Netherlands celebrated their first ever victory among the top eight nations with their winning star Epke Zonderland ....
* All-around --: Samuel Mikulak (USA) lost the bronze medal at the last apparatus after a mistake at the horizontal bar and came on fifth place. So the bronze went to Russia, to Nikita NAGORNY (86,331). Since 1999 in Tianjin (Nikolai Kryukov), after almost 2 decades this is only the second single all-around victory of a Russian athlete again since 1991.
♦ At the end CHINA won three gold medals and one silver in all-around. RUSSIA finished with each two Gold, two Silver and two bronze medals, with a young and dynamic team for the future! JAPAN won also 4 Medals but no Gold, because on High bar title holder Kohei UCHIMURA lost his title to the "Flying Dutchman", the 32-years old Epke ZONDERLAND, who won his third high bar gold.
Finally after the apparatus finals this year's new world champions came from five different nations and a total of 13 countries won the medals at these 2018 World Championships !

♦ The Men's All-around Final Competition
*f i g - report--: In a tie-break, Artur DALALOYAN (RUS) edged defending world champion XIAO Ruoteng (CHN) for the All-around title at the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Doha (QAT), ending a 19-year gold medal drought for the Russian men in the All-around at the world championships. His teammate Nikita NAGORNY claimed bronze for Russia. Dalaloyan's victory also snapped a 13-year winning streak by Asia in the men's All-around event, as Chinese and Japanese gymnasts won every world and Olympic All-around title for men from 2005 to 2017.
XIAO Ruoteng (CHN), Artur DALALOYAN (RUS), Nikita NAGORNY (RUS)
Day off pays off for Dalaloyan
Dalaloyan skipped training Tuesday after Monday's team final in Doha, where he fell off Parallel Bars and his team lost the gold to China by .049. On Wednesday, Dalaloyan sat in second after his 14.800 on Floor Exercise in the first rotation, but fell down the standings with just a 13.400 on Pommel Horse. He climbed his way back up thanks to a superb piked handspring double front vault (Blanik) for 15.133 and a nailed routine on Parallel Bars (15.566). He finished with a clean routine on Horizontal Bar that proved enough to take victory with 87.598.

"I had only one goal, and that was to perform my job from beginning to end without mistakes," Dalaloyan said of his approach. "I'm just so happy. I can't believe it yet. I need to probably go to my hotel, take a deep breath and realise that yes, I won this championship."
Dalaloyan is the second world All-around champion for the Russian men and first since Nikolai Kryukov won in 1999 in Tianjin (CHN).
Xiao settles for second
Xiao Ruoteng, the defending champion from the 2017 Worlds in Montreal (CAN) and the top qualifier in Doha, turned in the most consistent performance of the medallists, with scores ranging from 14.133 on Floor Exercise to 15.333 on Parallel Bars. After falling on Horizontal Bar in the team final, Xiao hit his set but was unable to stick his dismount. His score of 14.233 tied him with Dalaloyan, but the tie-break procedure - in which only the top five scores are counted - left him in second, 74.198 to 73.465. "I feel pity about that," Xiao said, "but I respect the judges and my rival. I basically want to be number one but anyway I am still happy with the result."
Nagornyy holds on for bronze
Second to Xiao in qualification, Nagornyy turned in big scores on Floor Exercise (where he tumbled the final's only triple back), Still Rings and Vault. He fought through his exercise on Pommel Horse but stayed on and struggled to land cleanly on his Parallel Bars dismount, and made it through his final routine on Horizontal Bar without major errors for 13.900 and a total of 86.331. Though happy to win the bronze, Nagornyy said he empathised with American Sam Mikulak, whose mistake on Horizontal Bar in the final rotation allowed Nagornyy to medal instead. Nagornyy thought hard when asked to whom he dedicated his medal, looking down at the bronze for some time before deciding. "If I had won the gold, I would have dedicated it to my whole team," he said. "Instead, I dedicate it to my first coach, Olga Ivanovna Nechepurenko."
The medals for Dalaloyan and Nagornyy are the first for the Russian men in the All-around since the late Yuri Ryazanov won bronze in 2009 in London (GBR).
Finals wrap-up
Sam Mikulak, third in qualification, had an excellent meet until stumbling in the sixth event. A slip of the grip on Horizontal Bar dropped him from third to fifth, behind fourth-place Sun Wei (CHN). Kazuma Kaya (JPN) finished sixth ahead of defending bronze medallist Kenzo Shirai (JPN), who earned the top scores of the day on Floor Exercise (14.900) and Vault (15.166).
James Hall (GBR) finished eighth. Ninth-place Artur Davtyan (ARM), who had originally been the first reserve athlete, and Marios Georgiou (CYP), 10th, turned in record results for their respective nations.
Competition continues Thursday afternoon in Doha with the women's All-around final.

♦ Russian men’s team look the part despite painful defeat
It may now be 27 years since a Russian resp. Soviet men’s team last topped the podium at a world championships but, having agonisingly lost out on top spot to China by just 0.049 points in Doha on Monday, the long-term prospects for the current quintet appear golden.
From Dmitrii Lankin on Still Rings to Artur Dalaloyan and Nikita Nagornyy on Vault; Russia had heroes all over the Aspire Arena during the men’s Team Final at the Doha 2018 World Championships. Ultimately the quintet fell just short, meaning the Soviet Union’s triumph in 1991 is still the last time a Russian men’s team topped the podium at a World Championships. But, even in the pain of defeat rising star Nagornyy acknowledged that his team is very much on the right track.
“There are two ways of making a team,” Nagornyy said after Russia finished on a team total of 256.585, just 0.049 behind gold medallists China. “The first is to make a team based on one leader. The second way is to make a team based on a number of leaders where all the athletes are very strong. In our team the competition is very strong, and by competing with each other we are becoming stronger and stronger. Each athlete in our team is a leader and can compete individually and as a team.”
There is no denying the truth of the 21-year-old’s words. Even with several significant mistakes – including an uncharacteristic early slip off the Parallel Bars by 2018 European champion Dalaloyan – Russia still came to the very final routine of a thrilling competition with the gold firmly in their grasp. While Nagornyy was not quite able to score the 13.783 Russia needed from him on Horizontal Bar – despite thinking as he landed that he had “won it” he actually recorded 13.733 – the fact they came so close and secured their spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games points to an ever brighter future. “We were very close to winning today and I am sure we are going to get over it,” Nagornyy said. “In Tokyo (2020) the favourites will be the Japanese, of course. But we and the Chinese team will, I’m sure, perform very well.”
Remarkably, the silver was the Russian men’s first world championship team medal of any colour since 2006. But having now won European championship team gold and a World silver in the last two months, as well as claiming team silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Russians are starting to make success a habit once again. “As sportsmen we know that we won’t know the final results until the very last routine but we also kept all of you guessing,” coach Valery Alfosov joked with the press after the competition, before he later added, “We didn’t show what we are capable of but the other teams also didn’t show what they are capable of.”
Despite not being at their best Russia did score highest on Still Rings and Vault – on which Dalaloyan recorded 15.066 and Nagornyy hit 15.033. On the back of such performances it was left to seven-time world veteran Nikolai Kuksenkov to aptly sum up his team’s trajectory. “I think next year we will be better,” Kuksenkov said simply. It is a comforting thought for the Russians and perhaps a worrying one for their competitors. * source: fig-press release

!! ♦ MEN's QUALIFICATION -
World, Olympic champion Japanese in third
Olympic champion Japan, the defending world champion from the 2015 Worlds in Glasgow (GBR), struggled in spots in the early morning session on Friday, with four missed routines on Pommel Horse, and finished third behind China with a team total of 253.312.
Two-time Olympic All-around champion Kohei Uchimura, who won six consecutive world All-around titles between 2009 and 2015, competed three events only after spraining his ankle last month. He earned the top score on Horizontal Bar, where he showed three huge release moves (piked Kovacs, Cassina, and Kolman).
Olympic teammate Shirai, the reigning world champion on Floor Exercise and Vault, qualified to the finals on his two best events.
The United States, Great Britain, Brazil, Netherlands, and Switzerland also advanced to the team final, taking place 29 October. It is the first world team final for the Dutch men's team, but German team fall down on 10th place ...

♦ P R E V I E W :
* TEAMS -: For nearly a quarter of a century (- since the > WCh Dortmund 1994) CHINA dominated with 10-times team gold and allowed only two exceptions: 2001 to the > Worlds in Ghent/Belgium - there won BELARUS - and at last JAPAN (1x; > in Glasgow 2015) as current defending champion of the nations classification in the men's category.
In particular, JAPAN has experienced a steady boom since the turn of the millennium. After two bronze medals, it has been adding silver three times in a row since Stuttgart in 2007 and refining it in Glasgow in 2015 for the gold medal ahead of GREAT BRITAIN and ahead of CHINA to top the gold medal for the 2016 Olympic Games, ahead of RUSSIA and before CHINA. This also includes all those nations that have the first ambitions in the fight for the current World Cup team medals 2018.
* Germany's hopes, however, have rather modest: Since the sensational bronze medal a good decade ago (> Stuttgart 2007) and in the "Hambuechen & Boy era" with the same medal 2010 in Rotterdam, followed a permanent descent: Rank 6 (> Tokyo 2011), ranked 8th (> Nanning 2014) and 9th (> Glasgow 2015). After finishing seventh at the Rio Olympics 2016, this year's focus is more on the current "workable, optimal team performance" with a focus on qualifying for the World Cup 2019 in Stuttgart, and that should be done ...!
The fact that German team boss Andreas Hirsch has high-sounding medal dreams seems to be out of the question right now and if you can even reach a final ... you will see!
