Helmut Gerschau - a Great of the German and international coaching Guild passed away ...!

One of the most distinguished great coach legends of the famous Leipzig gymnastics school, Helmut GERSCHAU, surprisingly passed away on Saturday after a short but strong illness at the age of 84 years. From the beginning of the Fifties on until the political change, he has led numerous gymnasts of Leipzig to internationally outstanding achievements and, as a responsible coach, many GDR teams on international stages and competitions. Already with his first performance generation he set accents and played a large part in the fact that GDR gymnasts were already able to celebrate impressive victories at the beginning of the 60's of the last century - as in 1961 Ute Kahlenberg-Starke could celebrate European Gold medal on vault - the very first big success for this young gymnastics nation in difficult political times ...!In the Nineties of the last century Helmut Gerschau worked for two years as a coach in Japan ...
In particular, with his extraordinary personality, which despite his consistently hard demands never lacked a near fatherly devotion to his protégés, he left deep marks in the hearts of all the gymnasts entrusted to him. Top stars Gymnasts like Erika Zuchold, Steffi Kraeker or later Bettina Schieferdecker, Jana Vogel or Birgit Senff and Tanja Koeste were trained by him.
