* f i g - r e p o r t --: Aleksandra Soldatova illuminated the Gymnastics Sports Palace as Russia dominated the Uzkbek leg of the 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup series. Soldatova achieved a clean sweep of five gold medals in the individual events, with Russia’s gymnasts also standing on top of the podium in the three group competitions. The 2016 Grand Prix Final All-around champion, Soldatova had won a hat-trick of gold medals when the World Cup series began in Sofia three weeks ago and she now surpassed that feat with five golds in Tashkent. The 19-year-old won the Individual All-around competition on Sunday with a score of 77,050, finishing ahead of Israel’s Linoy Ashram and compatriot Ekaterina Selezneva.
Soldatova also won each of the four apparatus finals – Hoop, Ball, Clubs, Ribbon
– with her highest score coming with the Hoop (19,900).
Israel’s Linoy Ashram took a gold medal in each of this month’s first two World Cups but had to settle for four silver medals and one bronze in the individual events over the weekend – finishing second to Soldatova with the Hoop, Ball and Ribbon as well as in the All-around.
Uzbekistan’s Sabina Tashkenbaeva gave the home crowd something to cheer when earning a silver medal with Clubs, forcing Ashram into third place. The other gymnasts on the podium were Russia’s Selezneva who took three bronze medals (All-around, Ball, Ribbon) and Boryana Kaleyn of Bulgaria who won a bronze with the Hoop.
* Russian Group’s supremacy
The Russian domination of the weekend’s event continued in the Group competitions. Russia’s supremacy in the Group All-around was underlined by the gap between their winning score of 43,200 and second-placed Belarus’s 36,850. Estonia completed the podium. The Russian ensemble won the Five Hoops ahead of Ukraine and Belarus, and also took gold with Two Ropes and Three Balls, with Israel second and Ukraine third. The final leg of the World Cup series will be in Baku, Azerbaijan next weekend (27-29 April).
