IOC: 2022 Youth Olympic Games in Afrika

"It's time for Africa!"

At its 132nd session in PyeongChang (KOR), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided that the 2022 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES will be held on the African continent for the first time. "It's time for Africa," said IOC President Thomas Bach (GER). To this end, the IOC will approach various NOCs in Africa and discuss the feasibility of such a project with them, according to a statement by the IOC. Since there is no further application process, but the IOC had decided by resolution of the session already in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro on a recruiting procedure, the approach of the IOC is a "... pro-active", it continues at the IOC. The host city of the 2022 Youth Olympic Games should be selected at the IOC session in the autumn 2018 in Buenos Aires.

♦ Artistic Gymnastics
* f i g --: In Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics 36 young athletes, with a maximum of one per country, will compete at the YOG. While male Artistic gymnasts must be born between 2001 and 2002 (16-17 years of age), female gymnasts must be born in 2003 (15 years of age) in order to be eligible for the YOG. Europe has 17 quota places for each gender, Asia eight, America seven, Africa three and Oceania one.

♦ Rhythmic Gymnastics
* f i g --:Starting with the European qualifier in Moscow this week, where 18 quota places will be allocated, a total of 36 places with a maximum of one per country will be determined for Individual Rhythmic Gymnastics. Asia and America have seven quota places, Africa three and Oceania one. Unlike the first two YOG editions, there will be no Group competition in Buenos Aires. To be eligible to participate in the Youth Olympic Games, Rhythmic gymnasts must be born between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2003 (15 years of age).

♦ TRAMPOLINE GYMNASTICS
* f i g --: Twelve male and twelve female Trampoline gymnasts born between 2001 and 2002, and with a maximum of one per country, will qualify for the YOG. Places are allocated according to the following quota for both men and women: five for Europe, three for Asia, two for America, and for Africa and Oceania one each.

♦ Acrobatic Gymnastics ...
... is new on the Youth Olympic Games programme this year with twelve Mixed Pairs. With a maximum of one pair per country, the continental quota places are as follows:
- Europe six pairs,
- Asia and America two pairs each, and
- Africa and Oceania one pair each. All countries qualify through the World Age Group Competitions in Antwerp (BEL) on 5-8 April and all athletes must be born between 2000 and 2003 in order to be eligible for the YOG.

In all disciplines, the places gained at the qualifying events are non-nominative, meaning the gymnasts who win the YOG spots for their countries are not necessarily the gymnasts who will be named to compete there. Entry deadline by name is 31 August.
