After four days of competition (Nov 16 - 19), the 25th World Age Group Competitions (WAGC) in Trampoline Gymnastics came to a close at the Arena Armeec Sunday with junior gymnasts from 17 countries returning from Sofia (BUL) with medals around their necks.
The 32 titles up for grabs were shared between 14 countries. More than 900 junior gymnasts performed in Individual, Synchronised and Double Mini-trampoline as well as in Tumbling in the age categories 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-21 years.site.
RUSSIA, which came second to CHINA in the medal standings at the Trampoline Elite World Championships the week before, topped the overall WAGC rankings with a total of 30 medals, eight of them gold.
With six titles and 16 medals in total, GREAT BRITAIN came second, ahead of the USA (11 total / 4 gold) and BELARUS (8 total / 4 gold).
China, whose senior gymnasts captured half the titles at the World Championships November 9-12, did not participate in the WAGC.
Russian gymnasts excelled especially in the Trampoline and Double Mini-trampoline competitions, from which they walked off with 13 and 12 medals, respectively.
It was Belarus, however, which won the most titles (4) in the Individual and Synchronised Trampoline events.
After winning gold and silver with the teams and two bronzes in the individual competitions at Worlds, Great Britain’s tumblers continued their success in the age group categories, where they garnered a total of 10 medals, including two golds. Matching Great Britain’s number of titles in Tumbling, Russia and the USA came second and third in the discipline’s ranking.
Interestingly, the eight titles at stake in the 17-21-year-old category - the age where gymnasts are eligible for senior competitions but can choose to compete in WAGC - went to seven different nations: Azerbaijan, Brazil, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Turkey.
Host Bulgaria was the proud winner of two medals in Synchronised Trampoline: silver in the girls’ 17-21 and bronze in the boys’ 11-12-year-old category, respectively. Held every year except Olympic years in connection with the World Championships, the World Age Group Competitions are the prime occasion for junior Trampoline gymnasts to perform on the World stage, gathering important experience as they build up their sporting careers with the aim of following in the footsteps of their senior role models.
