American Ragan Smith, the favorite to win the gold medal, was forced to withdraw from the final after injuring her ankle during the vault warm up at Olympic Stadium. The leading Japanese after the prelims, Mai Murakami, came on 4th place, followed by France's Mirela de Jesus dos Santos, the second Japanese Aiko Sugihara and by the Swiss Giulia Steingruber ...

♦♦ ** The elite of Artistic Gymnastics came back to Montreal, the city of the 1976 Olympic Games and 1985 World Championships. The athletes started here in a new Olympic cycle and the champions crowned here probably be seen again at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
These 38th WOMEN's World Championships are all the more action-packed for how they will combine different generations.
→ For the women, with American Simone Biles, the queen of the Rio Olympic Games, took a break from competition this year, so a new World champion emerged in the individual All-around. Also other Olympic champions are there, too: Among of them, Sanne Wevers (NED), who won the Beam title in Rio, Catalina Ponor (ROU), the triple Olympic gold medallist from 2004, and "Gym Lady" Oksana Chusovitina (UZB), still among the elite 26 years after her world title on floor in Indianapolis in 1992, but may be that these Worlds should be an event for the younger generation ...

♦♦ WOMEN's ALL-AROUND FINAL:
* f i g - report --: Morgan Hurd (from Indianapolis, living in Meddleton/Deleware) extended the United States’s domination in the individual All-around Friday night at the World Championships in Montreal, edging Canadian Elsabeth Black by a single tenth of a point, while Russia’s Elena Eremina took bronze.
* The queen is still American --: Since 2007, every major individual All-around title save for one has been taken by an American. Just 16, Hurd added her name to the ever-increasing list of champions produced by the United States, which includes Shawn Johnson (2007), Anastasia Liukin (2008 Olympics), Bridget Sloan (2009), Jordyn Wieber (2011), Gabrielle Douglas (2012 Olympics) and Simone Biles (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Olympics). Solid from beginning to end, Hurd clinched the title with her final routine on the Floor to finish ahead of Black, with whom she was tied at the halfway point of the competition. The U.S. had also been counting on Ragan Smith, one of the heavy favorites following the qualification round, who was expected to figure among the leaders. But her competition Friday ended before it began: an ankle injury sustained while vaulting in the warmup gym deprived the U.S. champion of the chance to start in the final.
* A historic medal for Canada--: Having the World Championships at home has suited Black. Lion-like as she affronted each apparatus, the 22-year-old Nova Scotian was spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd at every turn. Before her, no Canadian gymnast, male or female, had ever won a World All-around medal. Leading the field heading into the final rotation, Black nearly captured the gold, but ended her evening a happy silver medallist.
* Elena Eremina, following in the footsteps of Aliya Mustafina--: With 2010 World champion Aliya Mustafina, the double Olympic bronze medallist in this event in 2012 and 2016, coming back from maternity leave, Russia has found a new star in Eremina. Like Mustafina, the 16-year-old European All-around Junior Champion (2016 in Bern, SUI) excels on Uneven Bars. Having pocketed bronze Friday, the young Russian will attempt to take gold in Saturday’s bars final. A tenth of a point was the difference between Eremina and Japan’s Mai Murakami, fourth. Murakami led following the qualification round but saw her chances for gold evaporate after a fall off the Balance Beam.

* Maria Paseka, the reigning World titleholder and Olympic silver medallist on Vault, finished atop the rankings in qualification on the event. The Russian will perform in Saturday’s final alongside Rio bronze medallist Giulia Steingruber, as well as the doyenne of the World Championships, Oksana Chusovitina (UZB), who at 42 once again earned a ticket to the final on her best event.
* China’s Fan Yilin will also get an opportunity to defend her World title on Uneven Bars, though Russians Elena Eremina and Anastasia Iliankova dominated the qualification.
* ...and those who early exit The Netherlands’s Sanne Wevers, who made a sensation in Rio by clinching the Olympic title on Balance Beam, created surprise by making an early exit from Worlds. But Germany’s Tabea Alt earned the highest score on Balance Beam, thanks to her superior difficulty score. Romania’s Catalina Ponor, a three-time Olympic gold medallist from 2004, did not fare any better than Wevers.
* Amy Tinkler did not qualify among the top eight on Floor, the event that earned her bronze in Rio, but the young Brit will return for Friday’s All-around final. The shattered dream of Larisa Iordache Romania’s Larisa Iordache sustained an Achilles tendon injury as she was warming up on Floor Exercise, dashing the two-time World All-around medallist’s (silver 2014 and bronze 2015) hopes even before she had performed a routine. Iordache, who claimed the All-around title at the Summer Universiade in August, was the only All-around medallist from the 2015 World Championships competing in Montreal.
* This year for first time, the World Championships will feature Gymnastics Ambassadors. The winners of the individual All-around will have the honour of receiving their gold medals from the hands of Nadia Comaneci, the queen of the 1976 Olympic Games, who is also the official spokesperson of the event, and from Kyle Shewfelt, the only Canadian to have been crowned Olympic champion in Artistic Gymnastics (gold on Floor at the 2004 Olympic Games.)
