Velik KAPSAZOV, the legendary Bulgarian Artistic gymnast, who won his country’s first Olympic medal in Gymnastics, passed away on March 27, 2017, three weeks before his 82nd birthday.
Born on April 15, 1935 in Asenovgrad (BUL), Kapsazov – a weightlifter as a youth – became a member of the Bulgarian National Gymnastics Team in 1954. He took part in the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games, though Rome 1960 would be the Games he will always be remembered for.
After the Bulgarian team placed 10th, Kapsazov unexpectedly won the bronze medal on still rings, securing the first Olympic medal for Bulgaria in Gymnastics.
