But an uncharacteristic slip left the door open for someone else, and Sanne Wevers stepped into it, spinning her way to the title. The 2015 World silver medallist brought the Netherlands its second Olympic medal in Women’s Gymnastics, 88 years after the Dutch team’s victory in 1928 ...
→ MEN:  The new Lord of the Rings is Greek:  The rings crown concludes an Olympic odyssey for Greece’s Eleftherios Petrounias, who in April was the first to carry the Olympic torch as it made its way from Olympia to Rio. Clean execution was the key for reigning World Still Rings champion as he trumped 2012 Olympic champion Arthur Zanetti to deprive Brazil’s “Lord of the Rings” of a second gold after London. Petrounias, Zanetti and bronze medallist Denis Abliazin of Russia performed equally difficult routines, but Petrounias ended his flawless exercise with a stuck dismount.  >>  ... read more

^→ MEN:--Ten months after becoming the first British man to be crowned World champion (Pommel Horse), Max Whitlock inked the most glorious page in United Kingdom Gymnastics history. In the space of two hours, Whitlock won Britain’s first -- and its second -- Olympic gold medals, draping himself in the Union Jack after both Floor Exercise and Pommel Horse, where he deprived his compatriot Louis Smith of becoming an Olympic gold medallist in his own right by 0.133 points. Winner of the bronze medal in the All-around Wednesday, Whitlock, 23, brought his Olympic medal tally to five. → WOMEN: --:  Simone Biles had already dominated the Team finals with the U.S. women and the All-around final on her own. On Sunday the American crushed the Vault final. The 19-year-old Texan, who already holds a record 10 World titles in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, scored her first major title on the apparatus, an event where she had never done better than silver on the world stage. Using an upgraded second vault to her full advantage, Biles surpassed Russia’s Maria Paseka, the 2015 World champion and London 2012 bronze medallist, who took silver, her fourth Olympic medal, and Steingruber. 2008 Olympic champion Hong Un Jong (PRK) ranked sixth after falling on a risky new vault.
Giulia Steingruber (SUI) banked her nation’s first ever Olympic medal in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics with a bronze medal finish on Vault.

 ♦ REPORTs (FIG): --  The smile rarely leaving her face, Simone BILES flipped, spun and twisted her way to her second Olympic gold medal, taking the All-around title over Alexandra Raisman two days after leading the U.S. women to the team title. Biles, long the hands-down favorite for this Olympic title after going undefeated at the World level for the past three years, is now two-for-two in Olympic competition. The 19-year-old queen of the overall competition never flinched, hitting every extremely difficult routine to land 2.1 points over Raisman.
Biles is the fourth consecutive American gymnast to win this event, inheriting the crown previously worn by Carly Patterson (2004), Nastia Liukin (2008) and Gabrielle Douglas (2012) ...  >> read more

  ♦ REPORTs (FIG): -- The American women captured their second consecutive Olympic team title in high style Tuesday night at the Rio Olympic Arena (* photo, right >)
Led by Simone Biles, the reigning Olympic champions topped RUSSIA by 8.209 points, an enormous margin of a victory in a sport where hundredths of a point often separate the winners from the rest of the field. Just as they did in Sunday's qualification, the team -- Gabrielle Douglas, Alexandra Raisman, Simone Biles, Lauren Hernandez and Madison Kocian -- slayed the competition, hitting 12 of 12 routines as they romped to gold. It's the first Olympic gold medal for three-time World champion Biles, but unlikely to be the last: The 19-year-old dynamo posted the highest scores in the All-around as well as on Vault, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise during the qualification round.

 ♦ REPORTs (FIG): -- After silvers at the past two Olympic Games, Kohei Uchimura led the JAPANESE MEN's TEAM to a long sought after team gold medal Monday night.

The 2015 World champions defeated a surging Russian team, while 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion China finished with bronze.
The result was the realisation of a long-held goal for Uchimura, the reigning Olympic and six-time World All-around champion, as well as his teammates Kenzo Shirai, Ryohei Kato, Yusuke Tanaka and Koji Yamamuro. It is the seventh Olympic title for Japan, 12 years after their last team gold in Athens 2004 ...

<<  FIG President Bruno Grandi visited French gymnast Samir Ait Said in the hospital Sunday, one day after his heartbreaking fall on Vault during men’s qualification at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The 2013 European champion on Still Rings, who sustained an open double fracture of the tibia and fibula, underwent a successful surgery at the Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro and will be released on Monday.
