Competing at her first World Cup event in two years, World Aerobic silver medallist Oana Constantin served notice that she will be among the challengers for the World title next month in Incheon, Korea. Absent from the first two World Cups of the season, the reigning World silver medallist took the Cantanhede World Cup title in Portugal this past weekend, topping teammate Bianca Gorgovan by a healthy half point margin to resolidify her place among Aerobic's upper echelon. Constantin, 25, has been Romania's top Aerobic gymnast for the past several years. Her accolades are numerous: In addition to numerous World Cup titles, she won the World Games in 2013 and the European title in 2015, and spearheaded the Romanian effort that led to three gold medals at the 2014 World Championships in Cancun. The coveted World All-around title is the only jewel not in her crown.
“For me this World Cup in Portugal is the last checkpoint before the World Championships in Korea. My goal was to do the Individual and Trio competitions without failure, and to get the best scores in Execution and Artistry. With the help of my coaches, I reached my goals for this competition and I can say I’m ready for the World Championships," Constantin said. "I am going back to the gym to correct the small mistakes I still have and improve everything.”
Romania romped to three titles in Cantanhede, populating the top two steps of the podium in Trio (Dacian Barna, Lavinia Panaete and Lucian Savulescu took gold over World Trio champions Constantin, Andreea Bogati, and Anca Surdu). They added another title in Group finals, with Barna, Gorgovan, Panaete, Savulescu and Gabriel Bocser headlining the team effort.
In the absence of reigning World champion Ivan Veloz of Mexico, World bronze medallist Daniel Bali asserted himself to take the men's gold over 2016 Suzuki World Cup champion Ryo Koreeda of Japan. Bali, part of the successful Hungarian school of Aerobic Gymnastics, has risen ever higher in the rankings during the past two years, and stands to contend for numerous medals at the Incheon Worlds in June.
Italians Davide Donati and Michaela Castoldi gave a sterling performance to capture their first ever World Cup gold in Mixed Pairs. The duo, silver medallists from last year's European Games, are fine tuning their exercise for what they hope will be a medal-winning performance at the World Championships. Theirs was one of a full set of medals won by the surging Italian team in Cantanhede: the Italian Group (Castoldi, Donati, Sara Natella, Emanuele Caponera and Paolo Conti) scored silver, while Castoldi added a bronze in Women's Individual.
