* fig-news --: The drawing of lots for April's Aquece Rio Test Event, the final opportunity for gymnasts to qualify to compete at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, was held Wednesday at FIG Headquarters in Lausanne (SUI).
The draw determines the rotation order for each country in the competition, which can play a big role in the strategy of gymnasts.
♦♦ The top three not-yet qualified Rhythmic Groups of the eight Groups (- at last 2015 Worlds in Stuttgart) who compete at the Test Event will advance to the Games.
♦ In Individual Rhythmic competition, 26 gymnasts will compete for at least six Olympic slots.
"The Test Event is very important," said Nellie Kim, President of the FIG Women's Artistic Technical Committee. “It is the final chance for teams that finished out of the top eight at the World Championships to qualify for the Games. For individuals who have not qualified, they too will take this opportunity to do everything they can to earn a place at the Olympics.”
All the Presidents of the FIG Technical Committees whose disciplines are part of the Olympic programme (Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline Gymnastics), participated in the draw.
Berths won at the Test Event are nominative in Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics for individual gymnasts, and non-nominative in Trampoline Gymnastics.
→This means that in Artistic & Rhythmic individual gymnasts, who win places to the Games win them for themselves and cannot be replaced at the Games by a different gymnast from the same country.
