Eurpean Champion Steingruber - most successfully also in Baku! |
Russia's Aliya MUSTAFINA won the first ever artistic gymnastics European Games all-around title!
Aliya Mustafina showed their dominance in this all-around final, both taking the lead in the second rotation and not letting go. Mustafina was outclassed on vault by Giulia Steingruber (SUI) but took the lead with a 15.500 for a gorgeous uneven bars routine. Her beam exercises was solid, except for a big hesitation on her side aerial. On floor she showed a double layout but fell out of her Y-turn. Swiss Giulia STEINGRUBER was very strong on vault and on floor but had too many execution errors on bars and beam to really challenge for the title. The real battle was for the bronze medal between Lieke WEVERS (NED) and Sophie Scheder from Germany. Scheder started the competition with a fall on her best event bars (13,766 only) to come back strongly and finish within a tenth of Wevers who performed solidly this whole competition to take the bronze.
At the final day Aliya MUSTAFINA won the title at the uneven bars, but GIULIA STEINGRUBER won gold on vault and also on floor exercises. With her bronze medal on balance beam the swiss gymnast was the most successfull athlete of these gymnastics evnts in front of Mustafina.
The European Games title onbalance beam went to Lieke WEAVERS from the Netherlands ...
