Gymnast Li Xiaopeng and speed skater Yang Yang have been elected the newest members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. Legendary speed skater and International Olympic Committee member Yang Yang and Chinese Olympic gymnast Li Xiaopeng now become the 49th and 50th members of the Laureus Academy, a unique collection of the world’s greatest living sportsmen and sportswomen dedicated to changing the world through the power of sport. Olympic legend Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, inducted the two giants of sport in a special ceremony at the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai.

Li Xiaopeng, who won four Olympic gold medals and eight World Championships, said: “To become a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy has made this an unforgettable day. It is exciting to see Laureus making such a commitment to my own country by electing myself and Yang Yang to join Deng Yaping as Chinese members of the Academy. I would like to thank all the members of the Laureus Academy for putting their faith in me and l assure them that I am excited to become a member of the Laureus Family and look forward to supporting Laureus in its humanitarian work.”
An unique association of 50 of the greatest living sporting legends, the Laureus World Sports Academy embrace the principle of using sport to help bring positive social change, among of them the former gymnastics stars Nadia Comaneci, Alexei Nemow and now Li Xiaopeng.
