Gymnastics Canada and Montreal bidding for 2017 Artistic Gymnastics Worlds

If Canadian organizers get the green light from the international gymnastics federation (FIG), one of the world’s major sports events will be coming to Montreal in 2017. Gymnastics Canada has delivered its bid for the 2017 artistic gymnastics world championships and is expecting to hear the outcome later this month after meetings of the international federation in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Canada is hoping to receive provisional approval from FIG conditional upon a positive site visit in November or December. The 2017 world championships are expected to attract more than 500 athletes from over 80 countries with a global TV and online audience in the millions. Montreal, which hosted the only previous world championships held in Canada in 1985, plans to stage the event at the Olympic Stadium in conjunction with other festivities to honour the city’s 375th  and Canada’s 150th  anniversaries respectively. “The championships will provide athletes from Canada and around the world with the opportunity to shine on the international stage,” says Richard Crépin, Chair of the Board, Gymnastics Canada. “It’s a huge undertaking but one that will provide great benefits to Canadian sport, the city of Montreal and our public and private sector partners.”
