FIG Office - press release +++: In a litigation between the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and Ms Irina Deleanu (ROU), international Rhythmic Gymnastics judge and member of the European Gymnastics Union Technical Committee, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled to dismiss Deleanu's appeal and confirm the second instance sanction issued by the FIG Appeal Tribunal.
The former Rhythmic gymnast is thus suspended from all activity until end 2015 and shall be responsible for all fees, including the reimbursement of legal fees to FIG.
Brief overview
It was upon request by the Cyprus Gymnastics Federation (CYP) that FIG opened disciplinary proceedings on March 21, 2012 after Ms Deleanu made remarks on television regarding judging at the Rhythmic Gymnastics qualifying events held in January 2012 for the London Olympic Games, and openly criticized gymnast Chrystalleni Trikomiti of Cyprus and her father.
On June 22, 2012, the FIG Disciplinary Commission issued a sanction against Ms Irina Deleanu (ROU), which she would appeal on July 13.
The FIG Appeal Tribunal reduced the sentence from a suspension through to end 2016, to end 2015.
