European Games - scheduled in 2015
Baku (AZE), 23rd January - Mehriban Aliyeva, the wife of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, who is also president of the NOC, has been appointed Chair of the Baku 2015 Organising Committee, the organisers of the inaugural "EUROPEAN GAMES", scheduled in two years time.
The "2015 Baku European Games" were approved by the EOC General Assembly last 8th December in Rome, and will take place in early summer in 2015, when 7,000 athletes will come together to compete in 20 sports.
This decision to hold the Games was taken at the 41st European Olympic Committees (EOC) General Assembly, which was attended by 49 National Olympic Committees, last December.
The Committee will be composed of around 30 people, including key figures such as the Minister for Youth and Sport, the NOC Secretary General, and several Azerbaijani Olympic champions.
Ms Aliyeva, who chairs the influential "Heydar Aliyev Foundation", named after the grandfather of the current President, will be in charge of preparations for this event that will be making its debut on the international calendar.

A total of 13 sports have already been confirmed for the Games, which are expected to take place in June:
These are archery, badminton, boxing, canoeing, fencing, handball, judo, rugby sevens, shooting, taekwondo, table tennis, triathlon and volleyball, but now also gymnastics:
The European Gymnastics Federation (UEG) declared on its website this week:
"Based on the positive feedbacks of its member federations and after a lively discussion at the last meeting of its Executive Committee, the European Union of Gymnastics voted in favour of the integration of Gymnastics in the first edition of the European Games provided that all UEG conditions are accepted and that our Championships are included respecting the current technical formats."
