German victory at the Swiss Cup
|
Elisabeth Seitz, Fabian Hambuechen Germany
|
In the 30th year of the Swiss Cup in Zurich the Swiss organisers presented like already during the last years a team even with a preliminary round, a semi-final and a final. In the end the victory went to the team Germany 1 with Elisabeth Seitz and Fabian Hambüchen.
For the title holders from 2011, the team of the hosts Switzerland 1, consisting of the two participants of the 2012 Olympic Games Giulia Steingruber and Claudio Capelli, it was the silver melal this year.
On the third rank behind them follows team Germany 2 with Kim Bui and Marcel Nguyen.
The hosts from the Swiss Gymnastics Federation presented an exciting mode to the audience in the with 6,000 spectators quite crowded venue in Zurich. 10 teams consisting of one female and one male gymnast from 8 different countries started with two routines each in a preliminary round. After this 8 teams continued in the semi-final for which the scores from the preliminary round were taken over. The higlight with the final followed in the end for 4 teams. Here the scores started at zero again, so the excitment was certain to remain until the end.
With only a few regulations the gymnasts could decide for themselves on which apparatus they want to compete. So it was also possible to compete on the same apparatus twice during the day and through that to push one´s luck by upgrading the level of difficulty between the different competition rotations.
Elisabeth Seitz made herself a great birthday present for her 19th birthday, supported of course also by Fabian Hambüchen, with the victory today and the price money of USD 30.000 for the team.
Both gymnasts presented an excellent competition. Especially great routines by them could be seen in the final on uneven bars by Eli Seitz, although today she left out the diffcult Def-somersault, and by Hambüchen on high-bar. Fabian pushed his luck successfully with upgrading his routine from "only" a Kovacs-somersault in the semi-final to a Kolman-somersault in the final.

Silver for Team Switzerland 1 with Capelli and Steingruber
|
The title holders from team Switzerland 1 Giulia Steingruber and Claudio Capelli missed the victory by half a point this year but nonetheless showed good performances and through this won well-deserved silver medals.
A lot of cheers from the audience were especially heard for Giulia's thrilling "Chusovitina" (handspring - layout fwd. with 1 1/2 twists) on vault.

Kim Bui, Marcel Nguyen (GER)
|
At the beginning it looked like a clear victory for team Germany 2 with Kim Bui and the two-time Olympic silver medalist Marcel Nguyen. However, Marcel was not as lucky as Fabian before - He upgraded his dismount on parallel bars from a double somersault piked in the semi-final to a full-in in the final but unfortunately fell then in the final...
Through this he and his team mate Kim lost all chances on the victory. Until then both of them showed a very good competition with only slight insecurities by Nguyen on rings.
The final was completed by the team from Belarus.
Right at the beginning Nastassia Marachkouskaya fell on her handspring - somersault fwd. piked on vault. Also the well-executed and difficult (D-score 6.9) routine on parallel bars of her team mate Andrey Likhovitski could not secure them a medal. It was not enough to reach the final today for the teams from Korea with Ji Hye Sung and Hak Seon Yang, the second Swiss team consisting of Jessica Diacci and Nils Haller, the team from Italy with Carlotta Ferlito and Paolo Ottavi and the russian Team with Yulia Belokobylskaya and Oleg Stepko.
All teams overall showed a solid competition, however didn't manage to get through preliminary round and semi-final without mistakes.
For the team from Great Britain with Niam Rippin and Sam Oldham the competiton was over after the preliminary round and a floor routine with 3 falls from Rippin for which she received less than 10 points (9.350).
Also the Ukraine (Maria Livchikova and Oleg Stepko) did not have the best day today and finished the event after the first round with two scores under 13 points for Maria (12.950 on floor and 12.400 on uneven bars).
