British Worlds Team Selection
|
2011 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships team selection British Gymnastics is delighted to announce the men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics team selected to compete at the World Championships in Tokyo from the 10-16th October. The 2011 World Championships act as the first qualification competition for places at the 2012 Olympic Games with the British teams aiming to finish in the top 8 to qualify full teams for London.
The experienced British teams are headed by 3 time world champion Beth Tweddle, with current British champions Hannah Whelan and Daniel Purvis, Olympic pommel horse bronze medallist Louis Smith and the 2009 world all-around silver medallist Daniel Keatings also amongst the 14 gymnasts selected.
British Gymnastics Olympic Performance Director Tim Jones said: “We have made some strong progress within both of our artistic programmes throughout the course of this Olympic cycle, proving that we can now be considered consistent medal contenders on the world stage. This has been important as we continue to work to enhance the reputation of British Gymnastics and enter the business end of the run into the London 2012 Olympic games. We are very clear that our priority for these Championships is to qualify both of our teams for London at this first opportunity. From the way our preparations in recent weeks have gone and the quality of the gymnasts we are naming today, we believe we have every chance of achieving this goal.”
Men’s Technical Director Eddie Van Hoof said:
“The 2011 Men’s British Championships confirms that the Great Britain men’s team for the 43rd World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo will be the strongest ever fielded. A strong compliment of coaching and support staff, united for the last 5 years will ensure that everyone will give their best. Complacency has no room on the men’s team, as no result is a given. The team has great belief that through their reliance and responsibility to one another, their efforts will be rewarded. Another exciting chapter is about to be written and we look forward to the challenges of team, individual and apparatus competitions in Tokyo.”
Women’s Technical Director Adrian Stan said: “We have now completed our final preparations and the mood in the camp is very upbeat and positive. The selection process went well and we are now all ready and fully focused on fighting for the top 8 in Tokyo”
