All the pomp (and a lot of the circumstances) of the London 2012 Olympic Games will be coming at 'cha in 3D next Summer. There will also be some very cool new tools for viewing the spectacle in the third dimension.
This news (and a whole lot more) has been sprung at the huge European electronics show IFA (International Funkaustellung) now running in Berlin. As sponsor of the first ever 3D Olympics broadcasts (and longtime Olympic games A/V equipment supplier), Panasonic got to tell the story at its IFA press conference.
In 2004, the first High Definition Olympic feeds were served up from Athens, with some commentators scoffing that "no one will be watching." Today, with more than 65 million sets sold domestically, there's at least one HD TV in the majority of U.S. homes.
"The Olympic Games have always been a pioneer in the development of TV broadcasting technologies," noted Panasonic manging executive officer Tajumi Kajisha.
In fact, the very first, experimental TV broadcasts of the Olympics occurred 75 years ago from Berlin, with a viewing audience of about 200,000, added Manolo Romero, managing director of the Oympic Broadcasting Services.
The 3D Olympics coverage will be available to rights holding broadcasters around the world, said Romero, and will feature about 10 hours daily of "live" (in some time zones) coverage, The grandly produced opening and closing ceremonies will be popping through the screen, naturally, in 3D. So, too, will high flying events like ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS, diving and swimming.
And what are you going to watch it on? The very rich may spring for the "world's first large screen 3D TV that needs no glasses" introduced by Toshiba at IFA.
