FIG keeps the 43rd Worlds in Tokyo
The International Gymnastics Federation's Executive Committee voted at its session in San Jose (USA, Calif.) to keep 2011 Worlds in Tokyo, despite the concerns expressed by several federations, news agencies reported Friday.
The 2011 Worlds had been in limbo since March 11, when a 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami devastated parts of Japan. Several nuclear reactors were damaged, including the Fukushima plant a few hours from Tokyo. Cities around Fukushima have been evacuated, and reports have emerged of radiation leaking into Tokyo's water supply. The 43rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2011 scheduled for Oct. 7-16 at Tokyo's Metropolitan Gymnasium, are the first step for qualification to the 2012 Olympics. Any nations that refuses to send gymnasts to this year's worlds will forfeit its chances of competing at the 2012 Olympics in London.
