After the tragic death of the four-times European champion (1957, Paris)
Joaquin Blume in a plane crash in 1959
Jesus Carballo was the next Spanish gymnast, winning international top titles again:
World Champion 1996 (San Juan, PUR) and 1999 (Tianjin, CHN) and in 1997 the silver medal in Lausanne on high bar.
Jesús Carballo is part of the Carballo saga, a family that has ruled Spanish gymnastics for over 30 years.
His father is the National Head coach of the women's team and his two brothers,
Manuel Carballo (in active) and
Javier Carballo (retired, but now a national coach) are part of the men's national team.
