2011 Rhythmic Gymnastics Worlds change from Lille to Montpellier
The FIG office in Lausanne informed today, that the 31st Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships 2011, initially slated for Lille (FRA), have been rescheduled for the brand new sports complex at Montpelier, capital city of the Languedoc – Roussillon region.
The French Gymnastics Federation, organiser for this event, made its decision based on the optimisation of the welcome conditions for the participants and the public.
The championship has been moved to the new Montpellier Sport Centre, which is within close proximity to the airport.
In addition to the Olympic test events, these championships will serve as qualifying competitions for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Following Strasbourg (1983) and Paris (1994), this is the first Rhythmic World to be organised by France since the event was created in 1963 (Budapest / HUN).
The French Federation was handed the event at the 2007 Council in Orlando, Florida (USA). The discipline will vacation in Occitania, within reach of neighbouring Spain where impassioned Rhythmic aficionados are plentiful.
