Daiane dos Santos tested positive for Furosemide
* fig-press--: Former world champion Daiane dos Santos from Brasil tested positive for Furosemide during a non-competition doping control in July this year. Santos' club, Pinheiros, confirmed the International Gymnastics Federation notice on Friday.
Following standard procedure and after notifying the gymnast in question, the case was submitted to the F.I.G. Disciplinary Commission on October 29, 2009.
The gymnast’s right to reserve a hearing extends to November 13, 2009, after which date the Commission will rule and submit its conclusions to the FIG Presidential Commission for a final decision.
The gymnast has 21 days to appeal to the FIG Appeal Tribunal.
* Specialised on Floor exercises, Daiane Dos Santos... made her debut onto the international scene when she took the world title in Anaheim (USA) in 2003 and the World Cup Floor Final in 2006 in her native Sao Paulo (BRA).
** Furosemide, a weight-loss drug, can be used as a masking agent for other banned substances.
Sao Paulo-based Pinheiros said in a statement on its website that Santos took Furosemide from June through August this year to keep her weight down following knee surgeries.
She has been out of competition and in rehabilitation since the first operation in October 2008 and had another procedure in May.
Pinheiros also said Brazil's Gymnastics Federation and the nation's Olympic committee had been informed of Santos' use of Furosemide while she was out of competition and had been asked to pass on the information to FIG.
The Brazil federation removed Santos from its Olympic squad in October 2008, which Pinheiros' statement said excluded her from having to undergo drug testing.
After hours calls to FIG were not immediately returned to clarify if an athlete no longer competing or on a national squad was free from testing.
