David Sender (USA), who won the 2008 men’s all-around title last year in Houston but did not make the Olympic team after suffering a freak ankle injury during Olympic trials, said Tuesday he will retire after the US National Championships, which will held August 12 - 15 in Dallas, Texas.
Sender, 23, from Arlington Heights, Ill., is entering veterinary school at Illinois and said he would have to miss too much class to continue competing, even if he is selected for the world championships in London. ...
Sender plans to compete a Yurchenko double pike vault, one of the toughest in the world, that conceivably could merit a spot on the world team if he hits it.
Inside Gymnastics Magazine reported that Sender practiced the vault during the first men's training session at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Monday night, and that he plans to use it in competition.
“I have to go out one way or another,” he said. “Either it’s going to go really well, and that will be great, or I’ll land on my face on the vault. It doesn’t matter what happens. It’s all just for fun.”
