Worlds greatest gymnasts descend on Glasgow By V. Atkinson/T.Peake (Linda Gore) Oct 30, 2006, 14:01 Email this article Printer friendly page 10th Glasgow Grand Prix & World Cup Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics 10th – 11th November 2006 Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena, Argyle Street, Glasgow A superb line up of the World greatest gymnasts will descend on Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall on 10/11 November, for the 2006 Grand Prix, which marks the Tenth anniversary of this Internationally renowned gymnastic spectacle, in a historic year for British Gymnastics.
All eyes will be on Britain’s first ever Artistic World Champion Beth Tweddle on the back of her historical performance on A. Bars at the recent World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Beth has brought a new confidence to the sport of gymnastics in this country, something that organizers Glasgow City Council and British Gymnastics believe will make this event all the more special. The 2006 Glasgow Grand Prix is an extremely significant event in this year World Gymnastics calendar as it the final event in which the World best gymnasts can gain qualifying points to get into the top eight for the World Cup Final in Sao Paolo (BRA) in December. Numerous Olympic, World and European Champions and medallists will perform in Glasgow, with some of the most popular names in the Men’s field being: Marian Dragulescu (ROM), current World Champion on Floor and Vault, Diego Hypolito (BRA), 2005 World Champion on Floor, Krisztian Berki (HUN), 2005 European Champion on Pommels, Alexander Safoshkin (RUS), 2006 European Champion on Rings, Aljaz Pegan (SLO), 2005 World Champion on High Bar, Sean Townsend (USA), 2002 World Champion on P.Bars, Yuri Van Gelder, 2005 World Champion on Rings, Leszek Blanik (POL), Olympic and World Vault medallist, Vlasios Maras (GRE), twice former World Champion on High Bar , and a number of other World Cup Qualifiers medal winners from 26 countries. The women’s list also boasts great gymnasts, such as the double Olympic Champion from Sydney Elena Zamolodchikova and Olympic and World medallist Anna Pavlova, both from Russia; the World Bronze medallists in the All-around from Aarhus Sandra Izbasha and Steliana Nistor from Romania, The Australians Daria Jura and Olivia Vivian who also left their mark at the recent World forum on Denmark, as did the Brazilians Lais Souza and Daniele Hypolito, the Ukrainians Daria Zgoba and Olga Sherbatykh (UKR) and the Czechs Jana Sikulova and Jana Komrskova. In the company of these World beating gymnasts Beth Tweddle (Liverpool) will represent Great Britain together with her National team- mates, Lynette Lisle (Barry Girls, Wales) and Aisling Willaims (Liverpool). The 2006 Commonwealth Games Champion on Pommels and Bronze medallist at the recent DTB Cup in Germany, Louis Smith (Huntingdon) will compete along with David Eaton (Hinckley), Sam Hunter (Nottingham), Adam Cox (Leeds), Daniel Keatings (Huntingdon). No doubt, Scotland will follow with a specific interest the performances of their home grown talent, Adam Cox (20, two days after the event!), from Livingston, an excellent High Bar specialist, who moved to Leeds last September because of his studies at University. Adam Cox and Sam Hunter were part of the GBR Team in Aarhus that won the passage into next years World Championships and Olympic Qualifications.
