Malaysian Top gymnast wishes a personal coach
Malaysian Commonwealth Games silver medallist Ng Shu Wai hopes that his plea for a personal coach will be fulfilled by the time he returns from the Asian Gymnastics Championship in Surat, India, next month.
After returning to Malaysia four months ago to compete in the Commonwealth Games in March, Shu Wai, who is based in China, is still waiting to return to his second home.
The 20-year-old gymnast says the sooner the better, as he is preparing for two major championships this year; the World Championships in Denmark in October, and the Doha Asian Games in December.
'I hope that by the time I return from the competition in India, I will hear some good news about my new coach. I’m not complaining about training in Malaysia as I am under the tutelage of Zhang Jun here whom I don’t have a problem with. 'But getting exposure from abroad is invaluable and a rare opportunity. Plus I am preparing for two major events this year....', said Shu Wai....
In his three years abroad, Shu Wai had taken orders from four different coaches, where his last coach was his former teammate, Xing Ao Wei.
Awkwardness aside, the artistic gymnast also sensed some inexperience in Ao Wei, leading him to contact the NSC to handle his problem.
With his own personal mentor, Shu Wai, who is ranked number nine in the world, hopes that it will help him achieve his best ever results at the this year's worlds in Denmark and in Doha. He has already set his atrget for both meets.
'I hope to make it to the Individual-All-Around and Apparatus finals. The new code of points are tougher, and my standard has dropped compared to gymnasts from Japan, Canada, China, South Korea and Russia, but I’m training hard to adjust to it,'.
For the Asian Championships, Shu Wai hopes to be a medallist this time, after he finished fourth in the IAAF in Guangzhou, China in 2003.
