The IAAF regrets to announce that Istvan Gyulai(HUN), who has been General Secretary since 1991, passed away in the early hours of March 12.
“It is with deep regret that I have to announce the death of a friend and valued colleague,” IAAF President Lamine Diack said.
Gyulai was also one of the founder of the AIPS Gymnastics Commission and the first chief editor of F.I.G. Magazin 'WORLD GYMNASTICS', and a long time TV commentator of Hungarian television. One of his last big reportage was the World Championships 1991 in the Hoosier Dome of Indianapolis...

From 1991 on up to 2006 he worked as the General Secretary of the international track and field Federation IAAF.
Istvan GYULAI devoted his entire life to sports.
As a young man, he was an international athlete in the 400m and then became Head of Sport for Hungarian TV, combining that career with important positions in Hungarian and international sport.
He was a member of the IAAF Council from 1984 until 2001, and was appointed IAAF General Secretary in 1991, working tirelessly and with great imagination for the cause of world athletics. - the IAAF President appreciated the decedent and big loss...!

In 1978, at the world championships in Strasbourg (FRA), Istvan Gyulai was one of the most active founder of the special gymnastics commission of the' International Sports Press Association' (AIPS).
Some times later he was the first chief editor of the today's F.I.G.'s magazin 'WORLD of GYMNASTICS', which he directed fom Budapest.
Also all gymnastics journalists are in a big sadness about the death of Istvan...!
