Aisha Gerber of Cambridge, Ont., won the war with her nerves on Friday to take the gold medal in the women’s senior all around event on Friday at the Elite Canada gymnastics competition being held at the Palais des Congr?s.
Gerber, 15, dominated the competition posting the best scores on floor, beam and uneven bars and the second best score on vault, to total 37.225 points. Gael Mackie of Omega Gymnastics in Coquitlam, B.C., was second at 35.375 and Rebecca Simbhudas of Pulsar’s Gymnastics in Newmarket, Ont., was third at 35.355.
“I was most pleased with my uneven bars,” said Gerber, a member of the Cambridge Kips Club since she was three-years-old.
“I had been having trouble getting through the routine at recent meets and that was frustrating because I could do it in training. The problem was that I would get nervous and start to doubt myself. Today I gained the confidence I needed and learned I could battle through the nervousness.”
