Grand Prix Glasgow: World Cup

Beth Tweddle (GBR)

Squeezed between the 'DTB Cup' (Germany) and Maribor 'Solomunov Memorial' (Slovenia), the Glasgow Grand Prix attracted none but the brave and the enduring.
The Glasgow Men’s Floor Champion was Canada’s Brandon O'Neil. The battle on Rings saw Yuri Van Gelder of Nederlands just win Gold ahead of Russia’s Alexander Safoshkin. Lesnek Blanik of Poland won the Vault Gold. Dezhi Li of China was an easy winner of the Parallel Bars Final with a superb display of difficulty above, through and below the Bars. On High Australia’s Phillippe Rizzo take the Gold, 2 tenths ahead of the World’s greatest High Bar expert, Aljaz Pegan of Slovenia. ..

Great Britain had it’s greatest Grand Prix day with Men’s and Women’s medals:
Imogen Cairns took Bronze in Vault and Floor.
Beth Tweddle won Gold at Floor and Bars with a Bronze at Beam. So Beth was the most successful gymnast in Glasgow winning two Golds!
Louis Smith won bronze on Pommels. He scored 9.612 in a truly World Class field just behind he legendary Marius Urzica of Romania and less than a single tenth from the Gold medallist Kristian Berki of Hungary.
Lili Wang of China took the Beam title with a beautiful demonstration of quality and skill.
Veteran of 4 Olympic Games, Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan claimed the Vault Gold.
Glasgow has provided the FIG with an outstanding Grand Prix and British Gymnasts delivered a unique result to a packed house at the Kelvin Hall.

1st Day's Qualification
Media star of the qualifications was the 30 year old Oksana Chusovitina (Uzbekistan), 4 time Olympian and mother who led the field on Beam and Vault.
The British camp were delighted with final places for David Eaton (floor and high bar), the young Louis Smith (pommels), and Ross Brewer (Vault). Beth Tweddle top scored on Floor and made Beam and uneven bars finals. Chinese HUANG, Lu leads at bars, in front of Beth Tweddle and the Russian Polina Miller. After her success in Stuttgart (GER), Bronze on Floor, and 4th place on Vault, Imogen Cairns qualified for the Finals in Glasgow on the same two apparatus.
Rhian Pugh, (2004 Junior European Champion on uneven bars, also qualified to give GBR 2 of the coveted 8 Final places.

The leading athletes at men's qualifying:
The Canadian Brendon O'Neill (floor), Romanian veteran Marius Urzica (pommels), Russian Alexander Safoshkin in front of Dutch van Gelder - like in Stuttgart last weekend.
On vault there was no qualification, because only 8 athletes want to start.
Mitja Petkovsek (SLO) on parallel bars and Jeffrey Wammes (NED) on high bar are the residuary top scorer.
With the Finals starting new life scoring there is every chance of a rare collection of Grand Prix medals for Great Britain.
