Kabaeva: Engaged in Russian politics
|
The Russian Information Agency Novosti reported, that president Putin selects first members of Public Chamber.
He has completed a draft list of the first 42 people to be appointed to the Public Chamber, among of them is the rhythmic gymnastics top-star and Olympic champion Alina Kabaeva Experts told that everyone on the list for the new tribune, which will discuss civil initiatives and control the government's activities, had proven their loyalty to the Kremlin. ...
Alexei Makarkin, the deputy director of a Moscow-based think tank, the Center of Political Technologies, told the paper that the presidential list only included Kremlin loyalists:
'For example, Kabaeva put forward her position on [ex-chief executive of oil giant Yukos] Mikhail Khodorkovsky by signing a letter denouncing him,' he said.
Putin proposed establishing the Public Chamber a year ago after the Beslan hostage-taking tragedy in the North Caucasian republic of North Ossetia, when 336 people, many of them children, lost their lives. In all, 126 people will sit in the Public Chamber, but none of them will be government officials, senators, deputies or judges.
According to an official from the Kremlin administration, the list of the Public Chamber's first 42 members, renowned for their services to the state and society, is ready and will be published soon. Another Kremlin official said the list included Leonid Roshal, Russia's chief pediatrician, Alina Kabaeva, a rhythmic gymnastics Olympic gold medallist, and Valery Fadeyev, Editor of Expert, an analytical weekly magazine.
A source close to the Kremlin said the list also included Yelena Zelinskaya, the vice president of MediaUnion, an independent organization uniting media in Russia. Zelinskaya worked at MediaUnion, which was set up to counterbalance the Union of Journalists. The latter, Makarin said, had supported independent television station NTV during its conflict with the authorities in 2001.
Several sources in the business-friendly Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs said Alexander Shokhin, the chairman of the Coordination Council of Business Associations, had also agreed to join the Public Chamber. At the first stage, he will be the sole representative of business in the Public Chamber, Vedomosti said.
Andrei Ryabov from the Carnegie Center said there was no point expecting the chamber to represent any interests because it had been set up as an advisory body without any powers. Source: Russian Press
