The US Gymnastics Federatian has refered to a letter from FIG- president Bruno Grandi as 'outrageous request'.
In the letter Grandi advised the Olympic all-around winner Paul Hamm 'for reasons of fairness' to hand over his gold medal to the 3rd- ranked Yang, Tae Young from South Korea...
The US federation refered to this advise as “blatant and inappropriate attempt”.
Before this, the FIG had analyzed the case and confirmed that the start value the judges had given for the parallel bars routine of the Korean gymnast in the all-around was wrong and too low. In the end Yang was 1 tenth of a point away from the gold medal.
The protest of the South Koreans as well at the FIG as also at the international Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS has not been successful.
Paul Hamm regretted the incident but was not ready to abdicate the gold medal voluntarily.
