26. RG-WCh: Groups all around - Olympic Qualification
|
The World Champions - Russia
|
Russia (50.325) is again Group World Champion in front of Bulgaria (50.175), Belarus and Italy (both with the score of 46.450). On the ranks 4 to 8, which means the Olympic qualification, are following Ukraine, Spain, China and Greece.
The German group missed the qualification for Athens and ended up on rank 13, in front of them are the groups from Brazil, Poland, Hungary and Canada.
The quality of the group competition has been on a very high level and the gymnasts were celebrated by a thrilled audience in the Budapest Sports Arena.

spectacular - the group from Italy
|
Today for the first time real World Championships- spirit has aroused in the Budapest Sports Arena – and audience and fans have seen a very high-quality competition. Although the nervousness of some of the groups has been obvious – after all the Olympic qualification was decided today, the level of the competition has been extraordinarily high. The most spectacular routine has been presented by Italy with hoops and balls – the routine had already been the most original one in Riesa and now they even have upgraded it – and it has been presented perfectly today.
The title holders from Russia were chased heavily by the Bulgarians today, who received the highest score of the day for their routine with hoops and balls. The distance of the scores from these two groups to the following Belarus and Italy is larger then, whereas their ranking could also have been the other way round.
Competition report group B
Belarus: with their routine with hoops and balls they clearly show that they are fighting for a medal today; if you want to see synchronity then you can see it here. However, they then have to undertake some “rescue operations” with the ribbons – but also this has been a very difficult routine. When they had seen their score they ran into the audience ranks to watch the Italian group…
Italy: the group which has called for the most attention this year presented a truely display of fireworks in their routine with five fire-red ribbons: no other group has such speed, such extraordinary combinations and elements, the audience hardly could believe it. – And then the highlight of the day: Italy with balls and hoops –this is a unique show with such astonishing ideas and combinations which take one’s breath away. Everyone is looking forward to seeing it again in the final…
France: they have been happy after their routine which they have shown without mistakes today: better times seem to come up for the French group which had not been that successful during the last 2 years.
Hungary: loud cheers of the audience when the Hungarian group has started – and even louder ones after they finished. They presented their routine with Hungarian temper to Hungarian music, without mistakes to a perfectly built choreography which suits very well to them.
Brazil an extraordinary ball-hoop choreography which had been celebrated already at the Grand Prix tournament in Berlin – unfortunately with mistakes today.
Switzerland: a well created, sporty routine in an original outfit, nice synchronity but a few drops of the apparatus.
Japan: a very original routine with hoops and balls – but with quite a few mistakes right at the beginning; also mistakes in their routines with five ribbons.

China - secured their Olympic ticket

perfect - the Bulgarian group
|
Competition report group A:
Ukraine: Dressed classically in white after Swan Lake- music and with many large and original apparatus changes, very good technique but with 2 drops of the apparatus and not 100% synchronously. Then with balls and hoop in a Spanish style to 'Carmen' -very difficult, very good and without mistakes, againg with many large changes of the apparatus and original little ideas in their choreography which you easily miss seeing the routine for the first time, e.g catching and again throwing the apparatus with a foot...
Korea: Using music from 'Carmina Burana', very original, difficult and synchronal - but too many major errors, original ideas with the ribbon which you can't find in any routine of the other groups.
Russia: great performance between loud and quiet, elegance and power - also technically perfect, one drop of the apparatus (ball), many catches after large throws with the body, very difficult; but on the other hand also many catches with two hands for safety reasons.
Bulgaria: perfect routine with the ribbons, synchron even in their tripple pirouettes, many original combinations and throws - ribbons apparently getting over physical borders, high speed, always sovereign.
Germany: solid first performance, one drop of the apparatus (hoop) - out of bounds, otherwise synchron and with good changes of the apparatus, also a few small and medium mistakes with the ribbon, not the same quality of their performance as they had presented it in Riesa at the ECh's...
Spain: black and red outfit, purple-black ribbons; great performance! A lot of cheers from the audience, drums at the beginning and the end of their routine, in between original Spanish folks music – very original parts with the ribbons, synchron, a lot of power – very good! An interesting parody then with balls and hoops – a lot of humor, very well presented, without mistakes, also technically on a very high level.

full of spirits - the Spanish group
|
China: almost completely with drums music, two large drops (ball and hoop), original parts but not a very good body technique; regarding this, better Chinese groups had been seen in previous years – they narrowly went ahead of the German group; then a very nice ribbon routine – different from the ones of the European groups, very lyric and with original ideas with the apparatus and without mistakes.
Greece: solid performance, but two major mistakes and no real spectacular parts; also lacking a bit of synchronity. A large mistake at the beginning of the routine (one ball rolls out of bounds) throws the Greek group back – a pity for the beautiful routine to Greek folks music, it is speedy and has many nice small changes; after it the Greek girls were very disappointed…

highly celebrated by the audience - the Hungarian group
|
|
medals - out of reach for German gymnasts at the moment

“It could have been better“, commented Annika Rejek, who usually is a member of the German group but can only watch the competitions in Budapest due to injury, and this indeed is true. If you consider on what kind of high level the quality of the performances from the groups on the first 8 ranks has been today, it would have been impossible to qualify for the Olympic Games with three major errors in the two routines. The German team finally ended up on rank 13.
