USA Stuns The World With First-Ever World Team Gold Medal
- August 20, 2003 -
by Brian Eaton, USA Gymnastics
- Team USA touted its depth for nearly a year heading into the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships, Aug. 16-24 in Anaheim, Calif. After losing three world medalists to injury and illness this week, the United States found itself only half as deep as originally expected.
Despite the setbacks, Team USA's five remaining members performed flawlessly on the beam and floor to seal the nation's first-ever World Championships team gold medal on Wednesday at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.
Team USA's Chellsie Memmel, Carly Patterson, Hollie Vise, Tasha Schwikert and Terin Humphrey scored a 112.573 to top defending world champion Romania at 110.833.
'I don't think it's really sunk in yet that we are the first team ever to win Worlds,' team veteran and 2000 Olympian Tasha Schwikert said. 'We've been through so many different things this week and we are just in shock that we made it through another injury and that we are all still standing. It was awesome.'
Team USA qualified for the final in third place after bobbles on beam and floor, and appeared in danger of dropping a few more places after losing world vault bronze medalist Annia Hatch to a torn ACL, world beam champion Ashley Postell to the flu, and, on Tuesday, losing world uneven bars champ Courtney Kupets to a torn Achilles.
Memmel, the only U.S. athlete to perform on all four events, led the competition with the top all-around mark, including a meet-high 9.637 on the uneven bars and the competition's second-best score on beam of 9.575.
During team prelims on Sunday, Memmel qualified in fourth for the uneven bars event final, and in sixth place for the balance beam final. Teammate Courtney Kupets qualified in second place for the uneven bars final but is unable to compete due to an Achilles tendon injury.
The U.S. women finished with the bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, Belgium. The United States had never before won a team gold medal at the World Championships.
