A record participation, seven competition days, nine decisions
The 27th World Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics which will take place in Baku (AZE) from Oct. 3rd - 9th 2005 will be a very large event: Nine decisions will be seen during seven competition days, overall 370 gymnasts take part in the event: 150 individual gymnasts and 21 groups - this is a new participation record in RG World Championships.
The venue in Baku before the competition started
RG- World Championships only take place every two years, during these first World Championships in the period of 2005-2008 for the first time the age limit of 16 years for participating gymnasts will be effective.
The favourites for the individual events come from Russia and Ukraine
The title holder of the WCh's 2003 in Budapest, Alina Kabaeva (Russia), won't participate according to Russia's head coach Irina Viner, although the charismatic gymnast came back after her retirement and re- started training for these World Championships.
So Russia's team is led by the Olympic Silver medalist and 2-time European Champion 2005 Irina Tchachina and the European Champion with the ball and 2-time winner of the Berlin Masters 2005 Olga Kapranova. Russia is the title holder in the team event. Also among the favourites for the individual and team competitions are Ukraine with ribbon European Champion Natalia Godunko and 2-time Grand Prix winner Anna Bessonova as well as Belarus with Inna Shukova and her team mates.
Favourites in the groups competition
During recent competitions in Berlin and Deventer the group from Bulgaria managed to beat title holder and 2004 Olympic Champion Russia. Bulgaria however then was overtaken by the group from Italy at the World Cup tournament in Düsseldorf last week. In addition to these 3 groups also Belarus belongs to the candidates for a medal.
