The 19 years old Dutch gymnast Monique Nuijten, member of the European Vice Champion team in Patras 2002, declared her retirement from top sport this week.

With her 14th place in 1998's European Youth Championships of all-around competition the Dutch women's gymnastics climbed up step by step.

Eight golden medals went to the athletes at the first final day: On every of the three men's apparatuses were two winners :
- Floor: Paul Hamm (USA & Jordan Jovtchev (BUL),
- Pommel: Teng (CHN) & Kashima (JPN) and
-Jovchev again and Tambakos (GRE).
Also in women's finals two medals on bars went to the US-gymnasts Chellsie Memmel and Hollie Vise.
