INTERNATIONAL ROMANIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2000
Ploesti, Romanian, April 14 - 16

ROMANIANS SHINE AT HOME

.

Romania dominated their annual invitational held this past weekend in Ploiesti. World champ Maria Olaru
topped the women's standings with a stunning 39.05, scoring no lower than a 9.65 (vault) and tying for the
highest score of the day with a 9.875 on floor. Olaru was followed in the standings by teammate Simona
Amanar (38.763; also 9.875 on floor). Russian Ekaterina Lobazniuk was the top foreigner, finishing third (38.563), but would have been bumped to fourth by Andreea Raducan, who scored a 38.750, if her "exhibition" all-around performance had counted. (Only three athletes per country can finish in the official standings.) French star Ludivine Furnon struggled on vault (9.1), but rallied for fourth place, followed by Aussie Katerina Frketic, back from an injury that kept her off the '99 world team. Sixth went to Dutch star Monique Nuijten, the only Netherlands gymnast to qualify for the world all-around, and U.S. junior national team member Larissa Stewart finished an impressive 7th in her first senior international event.
