. | GYMNASTICS CHALLENGE 2000 |
. | 18-06-2000: SHANNON MILLER'S
return to international competition in the Gymnastics Challenge 2000 event in
Ontario, Canada produced a mixed bag of emotions. The 23-year-old winner of seven Olympic
titles, who came out of retirement in February in a bid to qualify for the US Olympic team for a third time, enjoyed one success but endured two bitter disappointments. Competing in three competitions on June 16, Miller suffered two falls during her beam routine, and another on the bars. Her respective scores - 8.850 and 8.100 - were disappointing by her own lofty standards. These setbacks, though, were followed by the highlight of the evening - as she recorded the highest apparatus score of 9.325 in the vault. Miller clearly has much to do to book her place in Sydney. Hence the fact that, instead of attending the training camp for US Olympic hopefuls on June 18 onwards, she will return to her gym in Norman, Oklahoma to train in private with her coach. This was the first international gymnastics competition to combine men's and women's scores. The US, who had a limited team of two men and one woman (as opposed to the more prevalent two-three combination), finished last. The winners were China, with a cumulative score of 132.35 - followed by Ukraine (130.5) and France (129.55). |
SHANNON MILLERs Comeback
beim International Challeges in Ontario/Kanada erbrachte unterschiedliche
Resultate.
